Republic of Eraclea!

ERACLEA MARE

Eraclea is a town and comune in the province of Venice, Veneto, Italy. SP42 goes through it. Eraclea Mare is the Lido of Eraclea.

It is located on the Adriatic Sea near the coast between the rivers Piave and Livenza and between two famous tourist towns: Caorle and Jesolo.

Tourism

Eraclea's Pinewood

Eraclea’s Pinewood

Eraclea Mare, one of the destinations of summer tourism on the Adriatic riviera, is together with Jesolo and Caorle one of the best known seaside resorts on the Venetian coast.

A steady growth of foreign tourists, especially from Germany, has been recently recorded.

Environment

On 7 May 2009 Eraclea Mare was awarded the “3 Sails” by the environmental NGO Legambiente. The city has been awarded the “Blue Flag” from the Foundation for Environmental Education every year from 2007-2009 for the cleanliness of its beaches and seawater.

Main sights

Eraclea's seaside

Eraclea’s seaside

Eraclea Mare is known for its pinewood and the “Mort Lagoon” (Italian: Laguna del Mort).

The Mort Lagoon, an unusual natural formation, was caused by the overflowing of the Piave river in 1935, whose bed was modified in its last stretch after a large flood.

The Lagoon stretches between the Eraclea’s Lido and the mouth of the Piave river and it is a sea-lagoon, being supplied with water only by the flood-tides. Still uncontaminated, the Mort is characterized by shallow and calm waters with a sandy and muddy seabed, rich in phytoplankton.

Economy

The city’s economy is mostly based on agriculture and tourism, because of its 6 km-long beach (Eracleamare).

Transportation

San Donà di Piave, 10 km away, has Trenitalia trains to Venice and Trieste. Venice Airport and Treviso Airport are 20 and 39 km. away to the west and north of the city. Treviso Airport specializes in low cost airlines.

Eraclea and Blue Flag 2021

Blue Flag to Eraclea

Blue Flag to Eraclea

The Blue Flag is an award that is given to beaches and marinas that have met stringent standards. The ‘eco-label’ is awarded on an annual basis to beaches and marinas around the world. The right to fly a Blue Flag at a beach or a marina is a strong indication of high environmental standards and is a much sought after accolade around the world.

The Blue Flag Programme is owned and run by the Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE) which is a not-for-profit, non-governmental organisationconsisting of 65 member organisations representing 60 countries.

Eraclea Mare Awards

As a result of the 2009 awards a total of 3458 Blue Flags are waving around the world: 2808 beaches and 650 Marinas. Eraclea Mare is one of them. In 2017 we have the confirmation of the best result of Eracleamare.

The city has been awarded the “Blue Flag” from the Foundation for Environmental Education every year from 2007-2017 for the cleanliness of its beaches and seawater. In 2010 the city of Eraclea, in the middle of venetian coast, is the most awarded beach in Veneto because, since 7 May 2009, Eraclea Mare was awarded too the “3 Sails” by the environmental NGO Legambiente.

The Blue Flag success

The FEE , each year checks and verifies that these requirements have been respected, and evaluate them according to certified, published procedures and applies them to any beach that wishes to earn the BLUE FLAG. Those who prefer a BLUE FLAG beach knowingly choose sustainable tourism, and can be sure that their vacations will cause minimal damage to the environment.

Eraclea's sea

Eraclea’s sea

One of the many essential conditions for receiving and keeping the BLUE FLAG is the absolute quality of the bathing water, i.e., that stretch of sea that is found near the shore where the overwhelming majority of tourists bathe. From April to September, about every two weeks, ARPAV (Agenzia Regionale per la Prevenzione e Protezione Ambientale del Veneto) carries out samplings and analyses of Jesolo’s sea water at 11 different sampling points, distributed along the entire beachfront (more than 130 samplings each year). The analyses of the collected samples point out above all the presence of the important microbiological parameters: fecal coliforms, total coliforms and streptococci. In general these microorganisms are present naturally but excessive concentrations in the water constitute a serious health danger so that exceeding the legal limits leads to a ban on swimming in that specific stretch of sea.

Criteria for awarding the Blue Flag

The BLUE FLAG certifies that the following requirements have been met completely:

Environmental Education and Information

  • Information relating to coastal zone ecosystems and natural, sensitive areas in the coastal zone must be displayed
  • Information about bathing water quality must be displayed

  • Monitoring on the health of coral reefs located in the vicinity of the beach
  • Compliance of the community with requirements for sewage treatment and effluent quality
  • Algae or other vegetation should be left to decay on the beach unless it constitutes a nuisance

Environmental Management

  • A beach management committee must be established to be in charge of instituting environmental management systems and conduct regular environmental audits of the beach facility
  • The beach must comply with all regulations affecting the location and operation of the beach (coastal zone planning and environmental legislation)
  • The beach must be clean
  • Waste disposal bins/receptacles must be available on/by the beach in adequate numbers, regularly maintained and emptied
  • Facilities for receiving recyclable waste materials must be available on/by the beach

The Mort Lagoon

The Mort Lagoon

The Mort Lagoon

The Mort Lagoon, an extremely evocative naturalistic site between Eraclea and Jesolo, was originated by the overflowing of the Piave river in 1936, whose bed was modified in its last stretch after a big flood. The Mort stretches between Eraclea Mare and the mouth of the Piave river and it is a sea-lagoon, being supplied with water only by the flood-tides. Still uncontaminated, the Mort is characterized by shallow and calm waters with a sandy and muddy seabed, rich in phytoplankton.

This is a very important site from a naturalistic point of view, enjoyable in every season, whose precious and delicate ecosystem is going through an extensive reclamation, aiming at the restoration of the original environment, that gives shelter to a great variety of plants and autochthonous animals.
The change of season corresponds to a change in the local fauna too: mussels, oysters, clams, crabs, grey mullets, flounders, soles, cormorans and terns, only to mention a few species.
The flora species are also numerous and peculiar: it is possible, for example, to see a great variety of water-plants living in salt-water.
To study and admire these peculiarities, the Territorial Laboratory for Environmental Education organises guided visits to the Mort Lagoon. At the Limosa Centre is also available an exhibition which is worth-visiting to get to know about the lagoon and the surrounding environment.

Eraclea Mare = sport and nature

Sands

Eraclea Sands

Eraclea Mare and nature

Eraclea Mare and environment, really two inseparable combinations.
Just because it is named the green pearl of Adriatic sea, this resort is the ideal place for a sports holiday dedicated to one’s own well-being and fitness, that must not be necessarily connected with sea and beach.
It is possible, in fact, to walk along the well-being path too, in the pinewood or walking by the Mort Lagoon…

The itineraries are the most various and also offer the opportunity to have a relaxing break in the Venetian countryside while tasting the typical products in a holiday farm or in a ‘trattoria’.

Furthermore, the river and lagoon water are ideal to practise sports and fishing.
And why not trying to become skilled sailers?

You just need to go to the local Dock and fix some sailing lessons!
